Barbados is a beautiful, generally upscale and friendly island. Twenty eight miles long and 14 miles wide, tourist do not have to worry about traveling anywhere on island during the day or night.  However, it is always wise to use proper judgement.

The Bajan people are friendly and approachable. The west side of the island, referred to as the Platinum West Coast is where La Maison Michelle is located. This is one of the most upscale sections of Barbados where some of the best beaches in the world are located (off the Caribbean Sea). The beaches are available to all (not private) and very few have vendors. The eastern part of the island, off the Atlantic Ocean, does not have swimming on the beaches but is a must see via a tour for its cliffs, rock formations and sheer beauty. The weather is a consistent 85 degrees year round. Add the steady breeze found at our villa and you’re in good shape. When it rains, it’s usually only for 10-15 minutes, if not just a quick sun shower. Our many sliding glass doors remain open through the day and evening.

As far as lifestyle, Barbados can be expensive as most products are imported. This will be best noted in two areas, food and transportation. For our guests, we provide an inclusive dining option that provides great value. For transportation, we recommend group trips to amortize the car service which is similar to the prices found in NYC.

About Barbados

  • Are all credit cards taken in Barbados?  MasterCard and Visa are fine. American Express is accepted by only a few retail stores.
  • What is the currency exchange for the US dollar? It is 1 US dollar to 2 dollars Barbados.
  • Can I use US dollars? Yes anywhere.
  • Are travelers checks recommended? No, as ATM machines are easily found and accept all debit cards.
  • Does the ATM machines supply US dollars? No, they provide Bajan dollars (BDS). So, for example, if I took out $200 BDS it would be worth approx. $100 US dollars.
  • What do I do with my BDS Dollars when leaving the island? There is a currency exchange booth at the airport. It is limited to $500 BDS dollars ($250 US). You should also be able to exchange these dollars at your local bank at home.
  • How far is the villa from the airport and the cost?  La Maison Michelle is a 40 minute drive from the airport. The cost varies between $60 US and $80 US each way for a car service or van. This price is for the entire car or van, not an individual price.
  • How about traveling around the island? It’s fun to take the bus. The best deal in town. It is only $2.00 BDS (coins only) and gets you around the island. For a private car service, our staff can easily arrange.
  • How does one get from the villa to the beach, supermarket, retail shopping and other businesses?  La Maison Michelle is only a mile from the beach and also Holetown, a quaint upscale town on the West Coast.  In Holetown, there are restaurants, the supermarket (which also sells liquor), a dine-in movie theater (a lot of fun), great shopping, night life, cigar bar, etc… It’s an easy cab ride of $15 US. Our staff can help with these short runs also.
  • Do you recommend renting a car? For American’s as the steering wheel is located on the right side and the roads have many roundabouts.  Bajan roads are also quite dark and narrow so unless you have had this type of driving experience, we would not suggest a car rental. Also, being chauffeured is part of the La Maison Michelle experience.
